Winter is the time for spontaneous red wine. dinner parties, cosy liaisons, fireside discussions and unplanned get-togethers-turned fiestas. In order to save you being caught without wine in the colder months, here we offer six warming examples to keep the fireplace crowded, that won’t break the bank.

A vibrant Macedon Pinot Noir, a juicy Tempranillo, a classic Nero d’Avola, a bio-dynamic Cab Sauv, and two very different but delicious expressions of the Shiraz grape.

2016 Si Vintners ‘Red’ Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot/Malbec (Margaret River, WA)

From the formidable duo of Iwo Jakimowicz & Sarah Morris, the 2016 Si Red has us very excited about Cabernet Sauvignon - something not often said within The Moon walls. From bio-dynamically farmed gravelly-clay soils, the intention was to make wine that can be drunk daily and in abundance. This is Cabernet that favours lightness and freshness over density and tannin.

2017 Xavier Goodridge ‘The Procrastinator’ Pinot Noir (Macedon, VIC)

One of the truly great guys of Victorian wine, Xavier Goodridge has looked after this one-acre plot in Macedon not far from Trentham for three years. Farmed organically, it will unfortunately be the last incarnation we will see from this vineyard. Take this wine as seriously as you would like - it is just as well at home on the table of a fancy dinner party as it is slightly chilled and drunk from the bottle at 3am kick-ons!

2016 Vina Albergada ‘Albizu’ Tempranillo (Rioja, Spain)

This Tempranillo is Rioja by everything but name! Sourced from limestone-soiled vineyards exclusively in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region, this is juicy, soft, supple Tempranillo that is just waiting to have a lamb curry thrown at it!

2016 Ciello Nero d’Avola, (Sicily, Italy)

One of more exciting versions of this robust little Sicilian grape variety we have stumbled upon in some time. It shows all the classic flavours of Nero d’Avola – think roasted red and dark fruits, liquorice, coffee and bitter chocolate, framed by a vibrant freshness that makes a second glass all too easy.

2016 Francois Villard VDF l’appel des Sereines Syrah (Rhone Valley, France)

Says the winemaker - “For me it is important to get some energy in the mouth." We couldn’t agree more Francois! This is a far more fruit-generous version of this wine than we have seen previously. It jumps out of the glass with dark plush fruits, but still with all that iodine, graphite, leather character that is so synonymous with Syrah from the Northern Rhone.

2016 Moonlit Forest ‘Dark Rose’ Syrah, Yarra Valley (Vic)

Moonlit Forest is the project of Jayden Ong, who as well as being a partner at Cumulus Inc. is the winemaker behind One Block and Le Maison Ong. This is plush, extroverted Shiraz for those who like the volume turned up a bit.
